AS/Credentials RPG/400 Introduction


Prerequisites: iSeries Basic Overview and PDM. Students should be comfortable with the editor (SEU) on the or iSeries.

Audience: This course is designed for individuals with no prior RPG programming experience

Description: The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the RPG/400 language. The objectives are for students to be able to write batch RPG/400 programs, create physical and logical files, define and access externally described files, compile RPG/400 programs and use the interactive debugger.

Course Content:
  • Features of the RPG/400 language, including basic coding rules and structured programming techniques.
  • The compile process, including compiler options and reading the compiler output.
  • Basic concepts behind databases along with the development filed reference files, physical fields, and logical files.
  • The process of defining externally described files.
  • Steps for accessing and updating sequential and random files.
  • Output from compiling externally described files.
  • The use of the interactive source debugger.
