Disaster Recovery.  In the event of a disaster (fire, flood, system crash), customers can bring their most recent back-up tapes to DMC and load their system on a DMC server. DMC also provides a VPN connection from its hot site to the customer user site(s), as well as a limited number of workstations at the DMC hot site.

This DR service is available through an annual subscription fee. An annual system test is required, during which a DMC technical specialist assists with the recovery procedures.

High Availability. For some businesses, a “most recent tape” recovery with the standard DR service is not adequate. They cannot afford several hours of system down time, not to mention the loss of all transaction data since the most recent back up.

To address this need, DMC offers high availability services. This service provides for real-time journaling of transaction data to DMC’s server(s). In the event of a disaster, a “switch” to DMC’s server(s) can be performed in a matter of minutes. Little or no data is lost, and system down time is minimal. Back ups are typically done at DMC.

In addition, a high availability strategy can eliminate “planned” down time associated with nightly back-ups and periodic system upgrades. This addresses the requirement for many businesses to have 7x24 system availability.

Patrick Sheehan, president of DMC, comments; “Until recently, high availability services were very expensive propositions for our customers. In the last couple of years, however, there has been a dramatic decrease in the cost of high availability systems (hardware and software). In addition, DMC’s high availability service eliminates the requirement to purchase a second, back-up server. This reduces the cost even more and, we believe, provides a great value to our customers.”

Hosting. There is a growing desire for hosting and co-location services. With this offering, DMC provides server power in a hosted “utility” arrangement (pay as you go), or provides the option for the customer servers to be located off-site. Under either arrangement, DMC handles all hardware and system management functions.
