DMC Storage Management Solution

DMC represents IBM’s SAN Volume Controller (SVC).

SVC helps to address the following major storage challenges:

SVC provides a storage virtualization solution by logically combining the storage capacity from multiple heterogeneous storage systems into a single reservoir of storage and one central point of management with the following benefits:

  • Single point of operation.  All storage management can be performed from one single interface. This improves efficiency and productivity, and minimizes the need to acquire and maintain skills on various storage controllers.
  • Single point of access for the hosts.  The host can have data placed on various storage controllers (storage tiers) without any concern, regardless of whether the multipath driver is supported on the different systems, since access is provided through the SVC.
  • Application of Advanced Copy Services across heterogeneous storage controllers.  The SVC Advanced Copy Services can be applied across the storage infrastructure independent of what copy services are available on the various storage controllers in the environment.
  • Changes can be made non-disruptively.  When storage is virtualized, the host applications are insulated from the physical infrastructure, changes to the back-end storage controllers can be performed without any disruption to the hosts. New business needs, for example increased capacity needs, can be accommodated faster due to a simplified and flexible storage infrastructure.
